Calling RNs to ‘Leap into Leadership’

Are you currently serving on a board of directors or ready to take this next step in your professional growth? If so, the American Nurses Foundation and the American Nurses Association are asking you to join the national effort to “Leap into Leadership,” which kicked off on Feb. 29, Leap Day.

Your participation is critical to improving the health of the nation in communities far and wide.  And, it’s easy to join the effort. Visit www.nursesonboardscoalition.org to fill out a simple form to be counted and encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same.

Here’s why the initiative is important:

•  Your knowledge about people, systems and health is valuable and applicable.

•  Board experience will help you grow personally and professionally.

•  You can have greater positive influence on more people.

This call to action is sponsored by the national Nurses on Boards Coalition — a collaboration of leading nursing and health care-focused organizations including ANA and the Foundation — with a goal to ensure at least 10,000 nurses serve on  boards across the United States by 2020.  The NOBC was created in response to the landmark 2010 Institute of Medicine report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” which recommended increasing the number of nurse leaders in pivotal decision-making roles on boards and commissions that work to improve the health of everyone in America.

Nurses represent the largest segment of the health care workforce, are considered the most trustworthy of all professions and play a huge role on the frontline of care in our schools, hospitals, community health centers, long term care facilities and other places. Their perspective and influence must be felt more in decision-making roles.

The guiding principle is that building healthier communities in America requires the involvement of more nurses on corporate, health-related and other boards, panels and commissions. We are calling on you to be a part of this national effort.
